A countermark applied by Sardis on a tetradrachm from Side

PAMPHYLIA. Side. Circa 205-100 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.15 g, 12 h), circa 200-190. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet; on cheek, countermark: bow in bowcase with ΣAP to left; all within round incuse. Rev. Nike advancing left, holding wreath in her right hand; to left, pomegranate above ΔEI. SNG Paris 674. SNG von Aulock 4786. Nearly very fine.

This interesting countermark was applied by the city of Sardes. It is part of a series of similar countermarks used by a number of cities to revaluate old Attic weight coins to the cistophoric coinage introduced in circa 180 BC
